James Langston Hughes is a very interesting person. Born on Feb. 1st, 1902, he was an african american. He had to live through descrimination, but when he was an adult, he never protested on the streets. In result of this, he was rarely sprayed with "the hose" (fire hose). Instead, he protested in writing. He wrote several proud pieces of poetry, writing, and articles about african americans and blacks. He is best known for some pieces of poetry and sketches that are about a man called "Simple". Then he went to Lincoln U., in Pennsylvania. He became engulfed in passion for drama. So he wrote plays. Many of which are about African Americans, and blacks. He died on May 22, 1967. Unfortunatly, he had to live much of his life under the frightening violence of the Klu Klux Klan.

The Ku Klux Klan is usually thought of as violent, racist, weirdos. For the most part, this is completely true. First of all, the KKK did NOT regard themselves as law breaker, instead they viewed themselves as law abiding law enforcers. Their parades, or most commonly called raids, were usually held by the klan that was local to the area that was to be, or being raided. But that was the old Ku Klux Klan, which lasted from the 1860's to the 1880's. Now, the Ku Klux Klan is a secret society of whites who oppose the advancement of blacks, Jews, and other "minority" groups. But the Ku Klux Klan members have always worn whit hoods and robes. The "old" klan would beat, or publicly embarrass a white male who "messed around" with a black or African American girl. The new klan did that as well, but they also opposed bootleging, moonshine, gambling, prostitution and other vices. But the KKK's guidelines have ALWAYS been the Ten Commandments. And in the 1920's, the KKK added the Jews and Catholics to the list of subversive groups. The KKK burned crosses at evening meetings to warn and frighten "non-members". The KKK exist today in 2008, and is expected to remain well after 2009. But the KKK has had 3 main periods of activity; (1) mid 1860's-1880's (2) 1915-1944 (3) 1940's-1970's.

Prohibition is the legal method of controlling the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages, the extreme of the regulatory liquor laws. The prohibition movement had its main growth in the United State of America, and then largely grew as a result of agitation 19 century temperance movement. A number of states passed a prohibition law in the earlier part of the century, but most of them were soon repealed. A new wave of state "dry" legislation followed the creation of a model law in Maine. Soon protesting shifted from temperance advocacy to the outright demand of complete, nation wide prohibition. The leader of these protests was the Anti-Saloon League. The protesting resulted in political pressure, which resulted in the Prohibition Party, which resulted in support from rural, and religious areas, plus several business groups. After World War I, the prohibition law became a national amendment to the constitution. This amendment was the 18th Amendment. It banned all manufacture, importing, exporting, and sales to and from the United States of America. But law enforcement was hardly affective, because of smuggling on a large scale (bootlegging), and manufacturing of liquor was cropping up everywhere, thus not preventable. Following came unparalleled drinking and law breaking. In 1933 the 21st Amendment repealed the prohibition laws. Even today many people still believe that there should be a prohibition, and others don't.
